Discover the challenges faced by Professional Foresters in large cities, be they development, provincial policies or the invasion of foreign pests.  A city planner and a local developer to come along and provide their perspectives on the challenges they face. The tour will visit three sites:

• Site #1: Pleasant Park woods to discuss group certification and woodlot management in ash stands infested with Emerald Ash Borer and invasive species such as buckthorn.
• Site #2: Briargreen neighbourhood to discuss Emerald Ash Borer effects on neighbourhoods, surveys, pesticide injections, tree removals, and ash wood processing.
• Site #3: Built by Tartan Land Corporation after 2005, Ottawa’s Jackson Trails subdivision borders on development lands with regenerating forests, wetlands, and species at risk. Integrating trees and other environmental values into new developments poses challenges for both the development industry and the City.

The history of forestry in the Ottawa Valley reads like the history of forestry in Canada. Names like J.R. Booth, Alonzo Wright, Henry Franklin Bronson and William Cameron Edwards all made their fortunes and their place in history by logging the legendary white pines (and other species) of the Ottawa Valley. Follow your forest historian guide Michael Rosen as he leads you past the houses, log flumes and mill sites of these famous “lumber barons” through Rideau Hall (Governor-General’s residence) and on to the Vanier Sugar Bush of the White Father’s monastery. Sponsored by the Forest History Society of Ontario, the stops will include:

• Site #1: The J.R. Booth, Bronson and Edwards Houses
• Site #2: The Bytown Museum where on display is the famous maquette of the E.B. Eddy Mill circa 1850
• Site #3: The Mill St. Brewery located in the historic Thomson-Perkins & Bronson Pulp Mill
• Site #4: Historic Victoria Island – site of the original E.B. Eddy Company of matches and pulp fame
• Site #5: Vanier Sugar Bush – Canada’s largest urban sugar bush

Bruce Vincent is a third generation logger from Libby, Montana. During the past 20 years, he has given motivational speeches throughout the United States and the world, has testified on natural resource issues before Congress and has appeared on several news programs such as “60 Minutes”. Bruce has been named Timberman of the Year in Montana, National Forest Activist of the Year, the Agri-Women’s 2007 Veritas Award Winner, and in 2004 received the inaugural Presidential Preserve America Award from President Bush. Bruce has been married to his wife Patti Jo for 35 years and has four children, two sons-in-law, one daughter-in-law, and five grandchildren. His current activities represent a family commitment to

responsible environmentalism
